Experts in the field warned over twenty years ago that these treatments were losing their effectiveness — and that prediction has proven true. The resistant strains now circulating are commonly called “super lice,” and they’ve become the norm, not the exception.

Research published in the Journal of Medical Entomology confirmed that gene mutations linked to pesticide resistance — known as knockdown resistance, or kdr — are now present in lice populations across most U.S. states, including Colorado.

When you apply a permethrin-based shampoo to a super lice infestation, you may eliminate some lice — but a large number survive, recover, and continue reproducing. The infestation persists.

OTC Treatments Don’t Remove Nits

Lice eggs hatch in approximately 7 to 10 days. So even in a best-case scenario where an OTC treatment eliminates all live lice, the next generation hatches less than two weeks later. Products containing Lindane — still legal as a lice shampoo in many states — have been linked to seizures, developmental disabilities, hormone disruption, and cancer. The EPA has banned Lindane from use on animals and in the environment because it’s considered too dangerous, yet it remains legal as a head lice treatment. Several states including California, New York, and Michigan have stepped in to ban it themselves — but Colorado has not.

Adding to the danger is the fact that many parents, desperate to get rid of lice, leave these shampoos on longer than recommended or re-treat too quickly. Improper use is both one of the biggest causes of treatment failure and one of the greatest risks to your child’s health.

Label warnings also prohibit use on children under two years old and by pregnant individuals — restrictions that often get overlooked in the panic of a lice discovery.
