Why Lice Removal Takes Time — And Why That’s a Good Thing
When it comes to lice removal, speed is not a virtue. Here’s why we take the time to do it right — and what “done right” actually means.
The 45-minute promise — and why it’s a red flag
You may have seen ads for lice removal services promising quick, convenient treatments — 45 minutes, in and out. It sounds great on paper. But if you understand what thorough lice removal actually requires, that number should give you pause.
Lice infestations aren’t a surface-level problem. Lice lay eggs — called nits — that are cemented directly to individual hair strands, often close to the scalp. They’re tiny, they’re tenacious, and they don’t disappear with a quick pass of a comb. Getting them out requires careful, methodical work: sectioning the hair, working through each portion strand by strand, and ensuring nothing is missed.
Forty-five minutes is simply not enough time to do that well — especially for someone with thick, long, or heavily infested hair.
What a thorough treatment actually looks like
Effective lice removal is a multi-step process that can’t be rushed. Here’s what we do — and why each step matters.
- 1Initial assessment. Before we begin, we examine the hair and scalp to understand the extent of the infestation, hair type, and length. Every case is different.
- 2Careful sectioning. We divide the hair into small, manageable sections. This is the foundation of thorough removal — skipping this step means missing areas.
- 3Detailed combing. Using professional-grade nit combs, we work through each section methodically — catching both live lice and eggs attached to the hair shaft.
- 4Manual nit removal. Combing alone doesn’t catch everything. We manually remove remaining nits, one by one. There’s no machine that does this better than a trained, patient hand.
- 5Final check. Once we’ve completed the full treatment, we do a thorough review to confirm nothing was missed before you leave.
Why does it take around 2 hours? Because that’s how long it takes to do this properly. Treatment time varies based on hair length, thickness, and the level of infestation — but we never cut the process short to fit a schedule. We stay until the job is done.
The problem with high-volume clinics
Some lice removal businesses operate like assembly lines — high client volume, fast turnarounds, and a focus on throughput over thoroughness. That model might work for a car wash. It doesn’t work for lice removal.
When a technician is rushing to move to the next client, corners get cut. Sections get skipped. Nits get missed. And when nits get missed, the infestation comes back — often within a week or two — and the family has to start the whole process over again.
We deliberately limit how many clients we see in a day. Not because we can’t handle more — but because we refuse to compromise the quality of care each person deserves.
